What would it mean to your business to be a featured expert on CNN, Forbes, USA Today or similar media outlets? You would be seen as an instant expert. You would also, if you set things up right, see an immediate spike in web traffic and social media activity. All really good things for your business. Amazing opportunities can come from being quoted in the media.
Pictured above are, Founder of HARO (Help A Reporter Out); Peter Shankman, web developer and web design teacher; Ralph M. Rivera and Triberr founder; Dino Dogan. They join me in this episode of The Nuclear Chowder Online Marketing For Small Business podcast to talk about HARO and how to leverage this tool to get quoted as an expert in the media.

What Is HARO?
HARO, now owned by VOCUS, is a free and simple tool that is the secret behind many people getting some amazing media attention. You simply setup an account and each day you will receive queries by reporters looking for an expert.
The query will come to you in an email. The reporter will tell you what kind of quote or information she is looking for and how to get in touch with her.
In this podcast episode, Peter lays out the perfect step-by-step method for using HARO. It takes a little bit of effort, but the rewards are more than worth it.
Your Turn

Good podcast, I’ve never used HARO, but have signed up before. I think for social media there must be a ton of people who use it, and there are so many ‘experts’ out there. I might try it out, but will definitely send it to clients to try.
Thanks, Mary. Yes, there are a ton of experts to compete with. So the trick is provide great info and be early.
Awesome and well needed interview.
Will be sharing each time I discuss HARO this interview as this is an awesome tool.
I love it both as a source and as a reporter. I’ve been on CNN, Forbes and so many blogs from just responding. I also love using it for blog post to get input from other entrepreneurs.
I attended a workshop with reporters who said exactly what you ended with, which is they get bombarded with responses. Once they get a few they want/like, they tune out. Thus if you want this to work 1) Be Consistent. Like Dino said you might have to reply 50 times to get 1 feature. 2) Keep it brief, they’ll contact you if they want more info 3) Be Fast. I’m one of those waiting at 5:30 AM, Noonish and 5ish each day. If your replying to a CNN question 2 hours later, your not getting looked at.
Awesome discusion!
I immediately signed up to HARO after listening to this episode. Great info. And Dino, I listened to your interview on TrepTalks.com, just awesome man.
thnx Herby 🙂
