It’s true, I’ve joined Snapchat and have been using it a lot. And the reaction I am getting from many people is… Why?
1: I’m an online marketing expert. I do this stuff for a living. So whether I like it or not, I need to try out all the new stuff so I can competently advise my clients.
2: It’s fun. A lot of my friends and peers are on it creating content that I enjoy consuming. It’s a little addictive quite frankly.
3: It is just another place to make deeper connections. Success in online marketing starts with making human connections. Snapchat is still very new and there are not as many people clogging up my viewing stream as is true of Facebook, Twitter and many other platforms. So it is giving me a great opportunity to connect with people I want to connect with in a more personal way.
4: It’s the simplest way to tell a story with video that I have personally found. Snapchat is about telling stories. And so is great marketing. I find Snapchat to be quite easy and inspiring to create short and to the point stories.
This is what I like about it at this point. I am still new to it so I expect to continue to learn more about it and how to use it.
Here is a video I recorded on Snapchat about this blog post. You will see the video is formatted as portrait which is not typical.
As a small business or professional I am not sure if it will be for you or not. There are a lot of people on the platform especially a younger demographic. You will have to look at that information and determine for yourself if people you want to reach are there.
I will have more to come on Snapchat as I continue to use it. If you want a tutorial, I’d suggest this video that my friend Cliff Ravenscraft created.
And make sure to add me as a friend once you’re on it. You can snap the code in the graphic on this blog post. All that means is when in Snapchat, take a picture of my icon with my face in the middle. Snapchat will recognize it as me and ask if you want to add me.
I’d love to hear your opinion on this. As a marketer or business professional, are you using Snapchat and what value do you see coming from it? And if you’re not a fan, what is it you don’t like. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
